Trains, Planes, and Automobiles: What it's like to travel in Russia

When we were in Russia adopting Little J we had the pleasure of being driven through Moscow, taking the subway to various destinations, being driven around Voronezh (a small city), and being driven in the country. We also took an overnight train to Voronezh. We did not have the pleasure of flying on Aeroflot or Siberian Airlines (bummer!) so I can't report on the pleasure of that experience, but there are stories all over the web about that.

As for driving around Russia: forget seatbelts, forget lines painted on the road, and if you are a pedestrian, WATCH OUT.

Road signs are confusing (not to mention in Cyrillic), people drive really fast, and since many of the cars are small they fit more cars across a city street than you could imagine. Parking is every which way.

The train was kind of nice, although definitely vintage, and the bathroom was revolting. I liked the food (my husband wouldn't touch it) and I found the train attendant to be great example of the stern Russian woman that you come across so often in Russia. Whenever I smiled at her I knew she was thinking I was an idiot!

As for flying - here are some reports:

The way back [on Aeroflot]was a disaster though and reminded me of the stories I read on the Aeroflot comment page. Only 1 toilet worked for the entire economy class! One would not flush and the other one I dare not ask what was wrong with it. There were lineups of 5+ waiting for the toilets almost the entire flight! I ended up waiting until I got back to the safety of Canadian toilets.

Can you imagine waiting 9 hours to use the bathroom?

Here's a better review:

I have a girlfriend in Russia so fly London - Moscow quite frequently. I have nothing but praise for Aeroflot. The planes on this route are almost exclusively Airbus, the food is excellent for an airline meal, and the attendants helpful if sometimes a little brusque. (Brusqueness is a very Russian trait). Also the overnight flight means that you have the whole of the next day, which is important when making short visits which I do often.

And another not-so-good review:

Breakfast consists of one roll (frozen!), butter (frozen!), ham, cheese, 1/2 egg, slice of tomato, piece of cucumber. First Airline to serve me a rotten egg and a rotten cucumber. Transfer in SVO horrible - had to wait some two hours in front of the "Transit desk" before being told that I have to go to "Transit office" 2 hours before in order to collect my ticket and boarding pass (no through-check in). SVO-NRT (after 6 hours stay) in 767. Leg room was fair; seating comfort was okay. Cabin in poor condition; toilets dirty and barely usable. Cabin crew did not have a single smile; meals (dinner/breakfast) barely edible (but not rotten nor frozen).

Not to self: whenever flying on Aeroflot pack protein bars...

Riding in a car in Russia was one of the most frightening experiences of my life. The roads are completely lawless.
