Krasnoyarsk
Where is it? Krasnoyarsk Krai is an enormous territory in Siberia that stretches from the Arctic Ocean almost to Russia's southern border with Mongolia. It is in its own time zone, and four hours ahead of Moscow. You can find the current local time here.

What's the biggest city? Krasnoyarsk, which is located toward the territory's southern end. The city's population was 909,341 as of the 2002 census, out of some 3 million inhabitants in the region at large. Other major cities are Achinsk (pop. 118,744 ) and Zheleznogorsk (pop. 93,875).

Who lives here? Mostly ethnic Russians, But as you might expect of a region that sits smack dab in the middle of Russia, many of the country's smaller ethnic groups also show up on the census here.

What do they do here? Mining: There are big deposits of nickel, cobalt, copper and coal.

Does it have any English-language news sources? I've recently found a site called Newslab. Its English can be bumpy, but it has a lot of current events in Krasnoyarsk.

How do I see what it looks like? There are some beautiful shots of the old and modern sides of Krasnoyarsk on Flickr; Fotki has a smaller selection.

How do I get here? If you've got time for a 58-hour train ride, the famed Trans-Siberian Railroad stops in Krasnoyarsk. Flying time from Moscow is about 4.5 hours. Both Aeroflot and Domodedovo fly to Krasnoyarsk Emelyanova Airport from Moscow; KrasAir, Rossiya and Sibaviatrans operate regional flights.

Which adoption agencies work here? Adopt-A-Child International and Adoption Source

Which Russian adoption bloggers have been here? Rochelle and Curtis at "Krasnoyarsk Adventure" adopted two boys last year. So did their friends the Parracks. The Goeppners are waiting for new referrals to replace those that they seem to have lost because of Russia's delays. The Morton family is trying to bring home a biological sibling to another child they have adopted. Gill at "Adoption Journal" adopted a boy last year. Bill at "Applied Thinking" is writing about his family's adoption plans and a lot of cutting edge technology. There is also a Yahoo! group, Krasnoyarsk_Adoption.

Truly trivia: Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the Russian baritone who starred in the Metropolitan Opera House's production of Eugene Onegin that I wrote about earlier this year, was born in Krasnoyarsk in 1962.

Need more information? "Way To Russia" has a Krasnoyarsk guide. Kommersant has very little to say on Krasnoyarsk, which is surprising given its size and the importance of its mineral resources. Here's the current weather in Krasnoyarsk city, but knowing that it is in Siberia should give you a fair idea of the climate.
