I need help! My kids bites his nails...

Little J bites his nails. I mean, he really, really bites his nails. Past the quick. It looks horribly painful. I have never seen anyone's nails bitten that low before.

It's gotten worse since he's started the ADHD medication. I will talk to the doctor about it next week. I also suspect it has roots in Sensory Integration issues - but I got him other oral stimulation toys and he refuses to use them. I guess he prefers the pain.

So I need help. Did your child do this? What did you do?

I bit my own nails through my mid 20s and then I stopped. I do, however, still pick at my cuticles so my husband has put the blame squarely on me for this. Big J bit his nails, too, for about 6 months when he was Little J's age, but then he stopped.

Heeeeeeeellllllpppp meeeeee....

Could it be pica? I heard that people with mineral deficiencies sometimes bite their nails. Little J had this when we first got him, but he got over it fairly quickly.

Should we paint his nails with that nasty tasting stuff that's supposed to get you to quit? Does that work?

My sister got fake nails so she'd be forced to stop. Like I said, I quit, but I'm not sure how or why. I guess I just decided it looked really bad. Little J reminds me not to do it, and I remind him, but he does it constantly and I'm not always with him.

I could really use some advice in this situation. Anyone?

If you find a solution, let us know. My 45 y.o. boyfriend does this, too. It does look painful.

Adrienne,

The stimulant meds can be adding to this. Are there other signs of increased agitation or anxiety? We use magnesium sulfate cream (Epsom salt) to help LuLu if anxiety starts to mount. She calls it her calm down cream.

It's worth noting to the doctor.

Is that prescription or something OTC?
He is actually doing very well on his meds - we tried longer acting which didn't work out so well - so we're back on the 3x/day 10 mg of ritalin. He has a noticeable "coming off" time after about 3 3/4 hours, but then he gets his next does. After school he sometimes gets emotional, but I sense that this has to do with all the new information he is processing because now he's able to. He's so much more in control of himself sometimes he has a little meltdown. I am going to mention this to the dr., as well as the nail biting.
He doesn't seem anxious, specifically, just a little overwhelmed. But overall much, much better and much, much happier.
I will look into the magnesium sulfate cream.

The only place that has it to my knowledge is Kirkman's Labs - www.kirkmanslabs.com.

It ain't cheap, but it helps.
