What with the need for a trip one, trip two, packing, regional pointers and the like, there's always a lot of talk about travel on the Russia Adoption forum board. But a
new thread popped up last week with a fun idea: Travel to Russia to see the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and take the kids along.
As you may have seen in the news last week, on July 4
Russia won its bid to host the games over South Korea and Austria. It will be only the second time that Russia has been an Olympic venue and its first time hosting the winter competition.
The site Russia proffered is Sochi, a city in
Krasnodar Krai that is well known to Russians as a summer retreat--it sits on the Black Sea--and as a retirement destination. It already has a well-developed tourism infrastructure and is well served by regional, national and international airlines. But Krasnodar is also at the western edge of the Caucasus Mountains, which gives Sochi all the chops it needs for skiing, snowboarding and the rest. (The official
Sochi2014 Web site features a video cam trained at the mountains to show their blanket of real snow.) The Russian government has pledged to pump $12 billion into building all the facilities the games will need.

The
forum thread about making the games the centerpiece of a heritage trip was started by a mom who adopted from Krasnodar. There's a big community of Krasnodar parents out there, and their interest in the region is clear. But even though my kids were born several time zones east of Sochi, I have to confess that I'm intrigued by the idea.
I have told both my sons that we could travel to
Vladivostok and
Sakhalin again when they are ready. For the moment, my little guy has no interest--he'd rather go back to Baltimore--and my older son is lobbying hard for a month in Japan. But in 2014, they'd be old enough to sit through a long sporting event, and all the people I know who have been to an Olympic event have raved about the experience. It would be interesting to see how my kids' birth regions will have changed, and I would love to show them the sights in
Moscow and
St. Petersburg.
It's too early to haul out the winter weather gear just yet. But put this idea on the "definite maybe" list.
